God’s Love

Q. Would you please give me three reasons why people say God loves us?

A. Sure. The love of God is exhibited in:

1 The giving of Christ:

  • Jn 3:16 For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life.

The world takes but God loves by giving, and not just giving anything but His very best, His only begotten Son. Usually we give only what we can spare, but to those we love we give the best we have.

2 Christ dying for us while sinners:

  • Rom 5:8 But God demonstrates His own love toward us, in that while we were yet sinners, Christ died for us.
  • 1 Jn 4:9-10 By this the love of God was manifested in us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world so that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Giving is one thing, dying is an entirely different matter. Dying for a good man is very rare, but dying for sinners is unheard of (Rom 5:6-7), yet Christ died for us sinners. Nobody does that for people they don’t love.

3 Our adoption as sons (children):

  • 1 Jn 3:1 See how great a love the Father has bestowed on us, that we would be called children of God; and such we are. For this reason the world does not know us, because it did not know Him.
  • Rom 8:17 and if children, heirs also, heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, if indeed we suffer with Him so that we may also be glorified with Him.

Not only did God save us freely by His grace, He adopted us into His family to become His children and fellow heirs with Christ. Would you adopt someone to be your children and give them everything for their good if you don’t love them?

I must quickly balance this by saying that God’s love is not an uncritical doting love, but a “tough” love that wants the best for the beloved, even if it means allowing them to go through tough times to learn their lesson:

  • Heb 12:6 For those whom the Lord loves He disciplines,
And He scourges every son whom He receives.”

God’s love will never spoil us, but you may doubt His love when you are undergoing trials! Rest assure that it’s for the best!
