Can Believers be Demon-Possessed?

Q. John 13:26-27 Satan entered Judas. I thought that believers were safe from being possessed by demons and evil spirits. If that is true, was Judas never a true believer? If he was not, how was he still able to do so many miracles in God’s name as a disciple? And if Satan entered Judas so he would betray Jesus, then is it still Judas’ fault?

A. This is a 3-part question, which I will answer one-by-one.

First, can believers be possessed by demons? The answer is NO, because:

  • Mt 12:29 Or how can anyone enter the strong man’s house and carry off his property, unless he first binds the strong man? And then he will plunder his house. (Also Mk 3:27, Lk 11:21)
  • Jn 14:17, 23  that is the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it does not see Him or know Him, but you know Him because He abides with you and will be in you. … Jesus answered and said to him, “If anyone loves Me, he will keep My word; and My Father will love him, and We will come to him and make Our abode with him.
  • 1 Co 3:16 Do you not know that you are a temple of God and that the Spirit of God dwells in you?
  • 1 Co 6:19 Or do you not know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God, and that you are not your own?
  • 2 Co 6:16 Or what agreement has the temple of God with idols? For we are the temple of the living God; just as God said, “I will dwell in them and walk among them, And I will be their God, and they shall be My people.
  • Eph 1:13-14 In Him, you also, after listening to the message of truth, the gospel of your salvation—having also believed, you were sealed in Him with the Holy Spirit of promise, 14 who is given as a pledge of our inheritance, with a view to the redemption of God’s own possession, to the praise of His glory.
  • 1 Jn 4:4 You are from God, little children, and have overcome them; because greater is He who is in you than he who is in the world.
  • 1 Jn 5:18 We know that no one who is born of God sins; but He who was born of God keeps him, and the evil one does not touch him.

A true believer is indwelt by the triune God – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. He is sealed with the Holy Spirit, as proof of God’s ownership and protection. His body becomes the temple of God in which God dwells. God is guarding His house. The devil does not touch him because greater is He who is in him (God) than he who is in the world (Satan). True Christians are completely safe from demon possession.
